Why doesn't Vixen do more to publicize itself in the Howden/Goole area? Whip

As a community radio station, we are allocated a frequency by OFCOM, and our transmission power is limited by them, too. Using this information, as well as the site of our transmission mast, OFCOM map the broadcast area that we are licenced for. Howden and Goole are not in our broadcast area. This doesn't mean to say that we can't be heard there - in fact I can pick it up in my car on the M18 near the A1 at Doncaster when driving home from work in Sheffield. This also doesn't stop Howden and Goole businesses advertising with us, as they want to sell their products and services to people who live in our broadcast area.
For the record, our broadcast area is Market Weighton, Pocklington, Holme-on-Spading Moor and the West of the Wolds villages in between.
Hope this answers your question!

Bill,
Thanks for your response...However it does not fully answer the question (and poses more)...
If Goole and Howden businesses are happy to advertise with VIxen and Vixen is actually available in their areas, surely you have a duty to promote the station there?
In addition, as Howden is the home of the Press Association,by promoting Vixen 101 there you are likely (at the least) achieve better national recognition for UK Community radio than there is at present?
When Vixen was only broadcasting for 28-day periods it did attempt to promote itself at the extremities of its broadcast reach, but it does not now appear to wish to do so...

Hello Whip !! Thanks for your comments about coverage and to further answer your question to what Bill has already said, Vixen 101 is now licensed in a different way to how we were when we operated as Vixen87 under the 28 day rsl licences. Ofcom as you are aware are the controlling regulator of commercial and community radio stations and as such the "official" transmission areas that both commercial and full time community stations have are enforced in the way that officially areas outside the recognised area ought not to be promoted and as such Howden and Goole are officially "outside" our area. That is not to be said that the station can't be picked up there - it can - but only on relatively low signal strength. Yes it is a reasonable signal in a car in Howden & Goole , but indoor radio receivers may struggle to receive the signal to a reasonable standard that could be considered listenerable. If the station promoted itself as covering these areas, and listeners couldn't receive the signal on an indoor radio in every room of their house, then they would complain to us as we would be promoting a service that actually couldn't be received. Therefore we only at present promote heavily in our local area. However, that is not to be said that occassionally you may find in the local media reference to us, as we have found that any free publicity anywhere is always a bonus. Also, marketing and publicity material costs money to produce and distribute and as we only have finite resources available, we are concentrating them in the area local to the station. We do have a few ideas on the table to promote us further and these may become apparent in time. To answer your comments about advertisers in the Goole area advertising on the station, we welcome any business from anywhere that wants to use us as it may expand their catchment area. Also, you won't be aware nor will I expand much further as to why specific companies may be advertising with us - it's a business agreement between each party.
In the meantime, if you would like to help us with publicity and spread the good word of the station we would be more than happy to hear from you as we are continually looking out for more willing committed volunteers to join us and help share the workload. It takes an awful lot of time / effort and money to keep the station on the air and every bit of help is very welcome. As you appreciate the station is operated by volunteers who the majority also have either full time jobs or are studying.
As regards PA, yes they have a large base in Howden, but they are a commercial national organistaion and although we have already had communication with them previously, at present we are not in negotation with them. That is not to say in time we wont - we'll just have to see what the future brings.
Hope this has enlightened you further
Regards
Ju
